Central Auditory Processing Disorder (CAPD) is a term for a range of hearing conditions that involve a breakdown in your hearing process. Rather than a loss of hearing, CAPD is when your brain isn’t able to make sense of what your ears hear due to a distorted signal. Around 5% of school-aged children suffer from CAPD.
Symptoms of Conductive Hearing Loss
Central auditory processing disorder symptoms are not always easy to recognise. You or your child could:
- Have trouble following a conversations
- Have difficulty following or remembering directions
- Be distracted by sudden noises or noisy environments
- Have poor organisational skills and ability to complete tasks
Causes of Conductive Hearing Loss
The causes of Central Auditory Processing Disorder are not completely known however research suggests that the neural pathways of the central auditory nervous system are involved. CAPD is sometimes accompanied by other conditions such as attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), autism and dyslexia.
